Driving from Melbourne to Warrnambool is more than just a way to get from A to B – it’s a journey through shifting landscapes, charming regional towns, and some of Victoria’s most scenic coastline.
You’ve got two main routes to choose from:
Inland Route ex Melbourne – Approx. 3 hours
The most direct option takes you west along the Princes Highway (A1), through Geelong and Colac. This well-signposted drive cuts through farmland and rolling plains, making it easy to reach Warrnambool in around three hours. It’s ideal if you’re short on time or planning to explore once you arrive.
Great Ocean Road – Approx. 5–6 hours (or longer, by choice)
If you’re in no rush, the Great Ocean Road offers one of Australia’s most iconic drives. Wind your way along the coast past towering cliffs, beach towns, rainforests, and the Twelve Apostles. There are countless places to stop along the way – so allow a full day.
Whichever route you choose, Warrnambool is worth the drive. Easy to access, but far enough to feel like a proper getaway.
